Pastel + Neon

Blazer: Zara, Peplum Top: Zara, Jeans: Zara, Shoes: Aldo, Clutch: ASOS, Sunglasses: Edward Beiner, Belt: Forever 21, Necklace: H&M

This is officially my favorite color combination of the moment. I’d love to say that I just dreamt up this color combo and knew it would be perfection. But, the truth is, this was just one of those lucky accidents. I wore these jeans on one of my random Zara expeditions, tried on this jacket in-store, and was struck by the unexpected beauty of the neon and pastel mix. Isn’t it funny how some of your favorite things can be the things you put the least thought into?

The fact that I am wearing three trends in one outfit is also pretty funny. Not too long ago, I avoided trends like the plague. After I finished law school, I started a mad-hunt for "big-girl" clothes in an effort to look “chic”. I bought tons of magazines, read tons of articles, and ended up with the idea that looking chic meant staying away from all things trendy. So, I purchased large amounts of classic pieces in practical colors and mixed and matched them to death. Though these pieces looked great together and many of them turned into wardrobe staples, there was still something missing.

After many months of my self-imposed ban on trends, I finally figured out that what was missing was – well, me. I wasn’t giving myself the freedom to make my own rules and formulate my own definition of chic. For me, chic is great fitting pieces, in classic silhouettes, with unique details. And, this three-trend outfit is pretty doggone chic in my book :).

I'd love to hear your definiton of "chic".

Love,
Jillian

  4. Chic to me is well put together, sleek, polished, bold without being overstated. Jillian I think you do a great job with you Outfits of the Day. It could be because you are a professional woman, but you just seem to carry your looks well which to me make up a good chuck of your "chic" quality! Keep up the good work chica!

  7. I work in the law field too and I can understand your hesitation with trends. Most people in this field shy away from colors or crazy patterns and such. It is a shame really. But I am loving your pastel and neon mix here! You look incredibly chic and very professional to boot!

  15. Love the unexpected color combination! I probably would have paired that blazer with the usual white or black jeans (boring), but those jeans pair perfectly. The muted pastel compliments the bright yellow neon and the nude accessories don't distract from that amazing blazer. I agree, perfect color combo :) Love love love your blog by the way!

  18. I'm so sure that if I were to open up a dictionary and searched for chic, there would be this photo of you as a definition =]

I adore that color combination as well. I first saw the photo on Naja Diamond's blog and I recognized you so I rushed over for more details.

I have a Zara phobia because I'm a college student with a 'saving money to buy a car and move out' budget. I'm worried of the damage I might do lol. ...Might end up being stuck home forever lol

  23. just joined your blog a couple weeks ago total fan!!!! I love your casual looks as well as your 9-5 wear! I totally understand what you mean about following trends. I have been an anti-trend person myself. As a professional I have struggled to find balance.... because I want to look like an adult and not a teen or an adult trying to keep up with teen fashion and sometimes trends can cater to that group. After finishing my master's degree I purged my closet for my new "adult" wardrobe that only ended up being bland. You have given me some great creative ideas and inspiration. In regard to trends I have learned they are what you make them....they are put in the mainstream for us to place out own stamp on it. :) Keep up the fabulous work!

  27. Chic is anything that complements my body type, a good color combination and keeping the details to a minimum.I am amazed at the color combination. Who could have guessed that neon colors would go so well with pastel? Thanks for the inspiration.
