What's the Verdict

Dress: Zara

Ok, this dress has been the source of much debate for quite a few weekends now and I need you guys to chime in and settle this issue once and for all. While shopping at Zara, a friend and I both spotted this cute dress and decided to try it on together. She stepped out of the fitting room and said, “I looove this! I’m buying it and wearing it to work on Monday”. I stepped out of the fitting room and said, “I looove this dress, but if I wore it to work on Monday, they’d fire me on Tuesday”. She then proceeded to try to convince me that the dress wasn’t too tight and was entirely appropriate for work. Her argument was that the dress’s demure length, long-sleeves, and conservative colorway made it perfect for the office. My argument is that the form hugging material is just more nightclub than office. Honestly, I think my main issue with the dress is that I feel way too sexy when I put it on. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think that it’s entirely out of bounds to feel a little sexy in your work clothes, however I was having an all out “bootylicious” sexy moment when I slipped this on. So I guess my stance on the topic is that a  dress that makes you feel like turning sideways and doing Beyonce’s “uh-oh” dance, is probably a “no-no” for work. Where do you guys stand? What exactly is too sexy for work and does this dress qualify?
Love,
Jillian

  1. Hmmm...I totally get your thought process on this, and I would say if you feel uncomfortable wearing this to work, then listen to your first thought. But, I have to agree with your friend. I think the style and color tempers the sexiness factor of the fabric, and I believe you could totally get away with this at work.

  2. I guess it depends on what type of office you work in. I work for child protection services in NJ and this would be appropriate. I see what your friend is saying with the length and the sleeves as that is also demure to me. Additionally, this dress doesn't come off as skin tight on you in the picture. You can't help it if you're bootylicious LOL... maybe you can wear it on a Friday. It's a bit much for a club but it's def a cute happy hour fit... I'm going to say it's work appropriate. Maybe you can throw a blazer over it to hide your curves a bit.

  3. As a professional who makes every effort to be sure that her male counterparts see her with respect, and not as a sex object, I wouldn't wear this to work. I agree with you that it's on the border. But that's exactly why I'd stay away from it (for work)! I agree with Yvie that it'd be a happy hour hit though!!

  4. I say go with your gut and your own personal comfort level. If you aren't confident in rocking it, that will come across and bring the entire look down.

  5. Tough one... it's definitely on the borderline so if you don't personally feel comfortable, I'd save it for another setting. You definitely don't want to feel self conscious about it in the office, that would ruin the entire look :)

  6. I agree with the other ladies. Your gut has to lead you. The dress does look great.

  7. The dress looks amazing on u doll!!! although it doesnt show any skin its quiet sexy maybe pair it with the perfect blazer for the office and for happy hour show off that fab figure :)

  8. Ooh, this is a tough one. Overall the dress is very conservative with a very subtle ladylike alluring quality. I personally don't think it is too sexy for work ON THE SURFACE, BUT I've seen your Hottie McBody in person, and I know you've got a killer hourglass figure. Sometimes it's not the dress, it's the woman in the dress. (Think Christina Henricks in Mad Men) Lol! You, my friend, are just too hot to trot! Lol...I'm being funny, but seriously, a woman with a different body type could wear that same dress and I wouldn't look twice.

I also think that it's all about how you feel in the dress. If it feels too sexy, then it is...but that doesn't mean you shouldn't keep it for a date night, or maybe even an office cocktail party!

  9. Well first & foremost go with your got if you don't feel comfortable don't wear it to work because you'll probably self conscious all day (been there & that's no fun)but if you do decide to wear it pair it with a blazer and not sky high shoes, hope this helps :)

  10. Great dress and it looks amazing on you! I think it's a dress you can totally wear to the office - I don't believe it's too sexy however your decision to wear it to work depends on what industry you're in. I say if you're not comfortable wearing it to work then don't...you want to feel confident at work not self-conscious. Go with your gut :)!

  11. I think you look amazing as usual. I don't think it is entirely too sexy for work however, if you aren't feeling comfortable enough to wear it to work without feeling like jaws are being picked up as you walk by then there is no fight.

  12. When in doubt, don't. There's always another time and place.

  13. it's office appropriate depending on where you work. you know your work environment better than anyone else. go with your gut. you could always save it for a dinner party or some sort of office gathering/party.

  14. It looks super cute, but I don't think it is work appropriate. One of those dresses that for a woman with a butt of=r an hourglass shape, it comes off as sexy. If you had a more straight up and down figure, you could wear it to work.

  15. I agree with you & you look soooo classy in this dress :)

  16. I do see where both of you are coming from.. I think this is something I would probably save to wear to dinner or something with my man. I say this because it's hugging in the booty area and he would totally find that sexy.

    Nice dress anyway

  18. Gorgeous dress for after hours...definitely a little too sexy for the office.

  19. The dress is nice. Although it is form fitting I feel that it is appropriate for work paired with maybe a blazer. I would not say that it is "club wear", but maybe nice date night with the Hubby :). I always go with how I feel in the mirror. If you put that dress on and it reads happy hour and not work wear, then wear it to happy hour. You will be uncomfortable all day at work in this dress.

You look good in it anyway!

  20. Depends on the atmosphere of dress in your office. It fits you nicely but I do understand what you're saying. One of my co-workers wears things that fit her bootay like this dress fits yours and let's just say her boss makes comments to me sometimes and she gets quite a bit of unwanted attention (per her) from the male co-workers. But I would say if you're not comfortable with it - don't wear it. As soon as someone made the slightest comment you may become self-conscious all day.

  21. I agree with Ebony. The dress is conservative for work, but how it fits your body is what makes it a little to sexy....no dice for work.

  24. You look gorgeous in this dress!! I am also an attorney so I understand your hesitation here. I would wear this on a day when I don't have any appointments with clients perhaps a Friday when I also have a lunch date or after work dinner with my significant other. It is certainly borderline but I think that you can get away with it on the right day. Again, you look great!!

  25. Hi Jillian, I think that the dress is work appropriate but if you do not feel comfortable in it then you shouldn't wear it there becuase you will not be your usual confident self in it!!!

  26. depends on the culture of ur office. Personally,I don't know if I will wear it to work because I will probably be the talk of the office . (I work in a veerrrry verrrrry conservative work environment, most people are really laid back with looks)

But if I was working say at the office I interned at two summers ago, I will totally rock this dress... I think it depends on ur work culture.

  28. I think you can put a blazer on top of it while walking around the office. Take is off on the way out. Some times its good for your coworkers to see you in a different light.

  29. I think its a no go for work - the tight fit of the skirt is a bit too much of a "look at me/my body" statement for an enviroment (conservative office) where you always want your work, then your personaltiy and then in LAAASSST place, your wardrobe to make a statement about you.

  30. Do you wear pencil skirts to work? If so, this look is fine

  31. i personally think its appropriate for work as far as the heels isn't so high. love the dress.

  32. Your post made me smile... from reading the response does this mean that hourglass women can't wear pencil skirts/dresses to work? I've been conflicted myself but why would hide work so hard to hide their curves?

  33. oooh God!!zis dress its so nice...i think am speechless,
    you rock my dear.

  34. It looks conservative and work appropriate in the front but the back view says other wise. :-)

  35. I think I overreacted the first time when I saw it. Upon the first viewing, it is a 'va-va-voom' attentiveness to it, but now that I am use to it, it is more conservative than I first thought. But I agree with the other commenter - the heel height can take it to another -sexier- level. Lower heels would help balance the fitted nature of the skirt.

  36. Gorgeous dress! You have the figure to carry this form fitting dress off without making it look inappropriate. I think it is a conservative style but if you don't feel comfortable then don't wear it to work. I wouldn't wear it to a club either...lol
